Kylian Mbappe has expressed his excitement about joining his anticipated new club, Real Madrid. Despite this, he remains noncommittal on whether he will support Madrid in the upcoming Champions League final, as he shared in a recent interview with CNN.
Mbappe, whose contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is set to expire on June 30, has made it clear that he will not be renewing his terms with the French giants. Although neither Mbappe nor Real Madrid has officially confirmed the transfer, it is widely assumed that the move to Spain is a certainty.
“I want to be happy,” Mbappe stated after receiving the Best Men’s Player award at the Globe Soccer Awards Europe Edition. Reflecting on his imminent transition, he said, “I will be leaving my country for the first time. It’s going to be an incredible experience, and I am eagerly looking forward to joining my new club. Winning trophies is what football is all about, and I am excited about doing that with new teammates.”
Mbappe acknowledged that his current contract with PSG is nearing its end, and he remains focused on what the future holds. “Everybody knows my contract is almost up, and we will see what happens next.”
Previously, Mbappe was on the verge of joining Real Madrid when his contract with PSG last expired in 2022. However, he chose to stay in Paris following a lucrative offer from PSG, a decision that propelled him to the top of Forbes’ list of the World’s Highest-Paid Soccer Players that year. Discussing this decision, Mbappe highlighted that it involved more than just remaining at PSG; it included factors like the World Cup in Qatar. “It was a big, tough decision, but I have no regrets,” he said, emphasizing the challenges and the achievements he has had, including becoming PSG’s all-time top scorer.
Despite achieving significant success at PSG, including winning numerous domestic trophies, the Champions League title remained elusive for Mbappe. Reflecting on this, he remarked, “I believe it’s part of the journey. I’ve had many chances to win the Champions League, and it’s part of my destiny. We came close a few times, but that’s how the game goes. Now, I want to cherish the good memories from my time in Paris.”
As Real Madrid prepares to compete for a record 15th Champions League title against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, Mbappe, likely bound for Madrid, insists he will remain neutral. “No, I won’t be picking sides. I’ll just watch the final like everyone else,” he said with a smile. He added, “When you love football, you watch every game. I watch games from leagues all over—France, England, Spain, Germany, Italy. So, of course, I’ll be watching the Champions League final.”
