A leading Catholic advocacy organization has raised concerns about the National Football League’s (NFL) proclaimed commitment to inclusion after the league distanced itself from a player’s religiously charged commencement address.
CatholicVote, a prominent Catholic political advocacy group, defended Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker in a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt. This letter followed backlash Butker received for his speech at Benedictine University, where he criticized President Joe Biden’s pro-abortion stance despite being Catholic. Butker’s address also touched on other controversial issues, including in vitro fertilization and the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In response to Butker’s remarks, the NFL stated that his views did not reflect those of the organization and reiterated its commitment to inclusion. However, CatholicVote challenged this stance, arguing that the NFL’s reaction undermines its commitment to true diversity and inclusion. The group questioned whether the league’s efforts to foster inclusion genuinely extended to Catholics, pro-life supporters, and those with traditional moral values.
Further controversy ensued as the speech drew criticism from various quarters, including the wife of an LA Rams quarterback, who described Butker’s comments as promoting “dangerous gender ideologies.” Additionally, the talk show “The View” characterized Butker’s religious beliefs as “cult-like” and suggested he seek therapy.
CatholicVote condemned the backlash against Butker, with its president Brian Burch describing the hostility and threats of violence as extreme anti-Catholic bigotry. Burch lauded Butker’s courage in publicly defending his faith and urged the NFL not to alienate millions of Catholics and other religious believers who are among its fanbase.
In their letter, CatholicVote expressed hope that the NFL would not send a message that religious individuals with traditional values are unwelcome, reminding the league that a diverse fanbase includes many who hold such beliefs. The NFL has yet to respond to CatholicVote’s letter or to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
