Newcastle United has reportedly made a bold move to secure the talents of young goalkeeper James Trafford, outpacing rivals Chelsea and Liverpool. According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has put forward a £16 million offer for the 21-year-old, although Burnley is holding out for £20 million.
Trafford, a former Manchester City prospect, recently faced the disappointment of being cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad. This development, however, provides him with the opportunity to focus on his club career and explore Newcastle’s interest. Alongside Chelsea and Liverpool, Bayern Munich has also been monitoring Trafford’s progress.
Burnley, currently without a manager, is expected to lose several key players following their relegation to the Championship. Chelsea has shown considerable interest in Trafford, recognizing his potential as a future star. However, to secure his signature, they will need to outbid Newcastle and fend off Liverpool’s advances.
Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation has been tumultuous. Last summer, they brought in Robert Sanchez to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga, but Sanchez left for Real Madrid, where he played a backup role. This led Chelsea to sign Dorde Petrovic, who emerged as the first choice due to Sanchez’s injury and Petrovic’s own strong performances. New manager Enzo Maresca seeks a goalkeeper adept with the ball at his feet, underscoring Chelsea’s serious interest in Trafford.
Additionally, Chelsea faces uncertainty with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has only a year left on his contract and is keen on a move. Liverpool is also eyeing Trafford as they anticipate the departure of Caoimhin Kelleher.
In a related development, Chelsea has confirmed their first signing under Maresca, with Tosin Adarabioyo joining from Fulham on a free transfer after four years with the Cottagers.
