Newcastle United has seen a remarkable turnaround in recent years, thanks in large part to their savvy transfer market dealings. One of their standout successes was the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The club is now looking to replicate that success by targeting another top talent this summer.
Since the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) took over in late 2021, Newcastle has invested over £400 million in their squad, leading to a dramatic improvement in their Premier League standings. Under Eddie Howe’s management, the team finished fourth in the 2022/23 season, although they dropped to seventh this past campaign, largely due to injuries.
Despite these setbacks, players like Alexander Isak have continued to shine, with Isak finishing as the club’s top scorer for the second year running. With the team missing out on European competition, Howe is keen to strengthen his squad to ensure better depth and avoid a repeat of the injury-plagued season. One of his targets is Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, a player who could potentially complete Newcastle’s attacking trio.
In the 2023/24 season, Isak and Anthony Gordon formed a formidable partnership, starting 61 Premier League games between them. However, the right-wing position saw a rotation of players including Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, and Jacob Murphy. To solidify this spot, Newcastle is eyeing Olise, who has had an impressive season with Crystal Palace, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in just 19 league appearances.
Olise’s stats compare favorably with Newcastle’s current forwards. For instance, Isak scored 25 goals and provided 2 assists in 40 matches, while Gordon contributed 12 goals and 11 assists in 48 games. Olise, with his 10 goals and 6 assists in 19 matches, averages a goal contribution every 1.18 games, highlighting his potential impact.
However, Newcastle faces competition from Chelsea and Manchester United for Olise’s signature. Crystal Palace is asking for a £60 million fee for the 22-year-old Frenchman. If Newcastle secures his services, it would be a significant investment, echoing the club’s ambitious moves under the PIF’s ownership.
By adding Olise to their roster, Newcastle hopes to build on their recent successes and continue their rise in English football. With Howe at the helm and the backing of PIF, the Magpies are poised to make another strategic signing that could further elevate their competitive edge.
